“The Businessolver Foundation truly embodies our core value of ‘Giving Back’ to the communities in which we live and work,” says Jon Shanahan, President and CEO of Businessolver. “Our employees, including our Foundation Manager, have done an incredible job identifying people and communities in need throughout the country, and they’ve taken action to donate funds, provide support, and, most importantly, invest their time and effort to make a genuine difference in peoples’ lives.”
Since its inception in 2016, the Businessolver Foundation has donated over $730,000, including more than $62,000 from employees to designated charitable organizations. Additionally, “Solvers” have volunteered over 4,000 hours of their time to charitable activities. In 2018 alone, employees doubled the number of hours they spent on charitable activities. The Foundation’s efforts span initiatives from health to education to community improvement in the geographic areas where Businessolver employees and clients are members of the community.
“The Solver team not only practices what they preach, but they continue to look for ways to improve and have a greater impact every year,” says Carrie Mueller of the American Heart Association, with whom Businessolver partners on a variety of events. “From our RAGBRAI Heartsolver initiative to employee health and wellness and community outreach, we wouldn’t be able to fund our lifesaving research without passionate companions like Businessolver.”
Supporting health for all ages
Throughout the year, the Businessolver Foundation adopted wishes for three children through the Make-a-Wish Foundation — two children in Iowa and one child in Denver. They sent Mason and Grace to Hawaii with their families, and provided Piper with adaptive ski equipment so she could ski with her family for the first time. All three children were also celebrated with a Foundation-funded party.
For the third summer in a row, the Businessolver Foundation participated as a proud premier sponsor of RAGBRAI (The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa), the world’s largest and longest recreational bike ride. Partnering with the American Heart Association, Hy-Vee, and SOLA, Businessolver conducted free blood-pressure screenings at booths along the route, with nutrition and hydration tips from Hy-Vee dietitians. This effort honors the legacy of Chris Charron, a Businessolver employee who passed away suddenly from heart-related complications.
In the Baltimore area, the Businessolver Foundation donated $5,000 to sponsor four events for the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC). These included Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, benefitting assistance programs for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. Businessolver also sponsored the Father’s Day 5K and Legacy Chase, which raised funds for GBMC oncology patient support.
The Businessolver Foundation raised over $7,600 for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) through their support for and participation in the NOCC Annual Walk/Run to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer. This was the second year of the Foundation raising money for Team Peggy, honoring Solver Peggy Brockhouse, who passed away from ovarian cancer.
Providing for education
Businessolver sponsored key initiatives with Junior Achievement, a nationwide organization that provides programming for more than 32,000 K-12 students throughout central Iowa. Its mission to help young people transition into 21st century life aligns with the Foundation’s vision of building a healthy, well-educated world where community matters. The Foundation provided a storefront and distribution center for the Des Moines JA BizTown facility, and sponsored JA in a Day in Des Moines and the Stock Market Challenge in Denver.
The Foundation’s annual scholarship program – open to eligible dependents of full-time and part time employees who have worked at least 2 years at Businessolver – awarded $32,000 in scholarships to 24 students in 2018, bringing the total awarded since 2016 to $59,000. Scholarship recipients can use the funds for university and trade school programs.
Solvers donated backpacks and school supplies for 4th-grade students at Roswell B. Mason Elementary School in Chicago. Snacks, supplies, and supportive messages from Businessolver employees helped students get the school year off to a positive start.
The Businessolver Foundation also sponsored a number of technology-education initiatives in various communities. As a technology company, Businessolver is dedicated to cultivating young minds and showing students the value and the excitement of a future in tech, programming, and related fields. As such, the Foundation sponsored the FIRST Tech Robotics Challenge at Johnston High School in Johnston, Iowa, and HackISU at Iowa State University.
Investing in our communities
Throughout 2018, Solvers donated their time and hard work to building homes with Habitat for Humanity. The Businessolver Foundation also sponsored the organization’s Key Awards event and the panel build held in Des Moines in September.
To support communities affected by the devastating wildfires in California in late 2018, the Businessolver Foundation donated $15,000 to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation. The LAFDF augments fire department funding when city budgets do not cover expenses.
The Dallas team of Solvers participated in a 5K to raise funds for the Katy Trail, an iconic nature trail in the Dallas area. Benefitting the Friends of the Katy Trail organization, this event demonstrated Businessolver’s commitment to connecting with partners, clients, and colleagues in support of community improvement programs.
The Businessolver Foundation also collaborated with Ronald McDonald House Charities around the country, including in Charlotte where they donated requested items as part of RMH’s Wish List Wednesday. Partnering with RMH in Iowa and Colorado as well as North Carolina was a great way for Solvers around the country to focus on team-building and engage with their communities.
Through all these activities, the Businessolver Foundation fulfills the company’s mission to give back by making positive contributions around the country where Solvers and their clients live, work, and participate in the social fabric as members of the community.
